Hi everyone! Tomorrow there will be no post. But today I’ll share with you two of my favourite cards I’ve ever made. Part of it is because the materials I used are precious to me: real vintage antique buttons with history and laces. So I’ll show you how to create 2 vintage bithday cards. El motivo principal de que me gusten tanto es porque los materiales que he utilizado me encantan: unos botones antiguos (mis pequeños tesoros) con historia y puntillas. Con ellos os enseñaré cómo crear dos tarjetas de cumpleaños de estilo vintage. Mismas técnicas y resultados un poco diferentes. Among my little scrap treasures I own an old metal box full of antique buttons that belonged to my grandma in law. She used to save buttons from everywhere and she kept them nicely separated in different tin boxes by different colours and types. I have the honour of taking care of that collection of buttons and I only use them on special ocassions or for special projects.

So the birthday of two of my closest friends arrived, one in January (Vsalentino) and one in April (Aida), and since they both like vintage style, I decided to create this card design for them and I realised that the buttons would just be the perfect embellishments for the cards, and I knew they would love them! Maybe you like them too…

These are both cards and except for the ivory layer and the brad at the bottom right corner on Aida’s, I’ve created them with the same materials and techniques. Although they may seem difficult to make, they are pretty easy, you’ll see.

  

I’ll explain Valentino’s first, since it is the simpler one and then I’ll go for Aida’s, which has extra layers and embellishments.

• Tsukineko sponge daubers – set of 3
• Adhesive (either double side tape or any other permanent adhesive)
• Scissors
• Craft scissors with shape (*)
• ivory cardstock (*)
• Papermania Brad Making Starter Kit with Refills – 588915 (*)
• Any patterned paper that have small flowers (*)
• Double Sided 1mm White Craft Foam Tape 12mm

These are all the supplies. I’ve marked the ones used only for Aida’s with an asterisk (*)

#1 – Happy Birthday Valentino!

HOW-TO

Valentino’s card is not to be open, i.e., it is a postcard. Since it has laces and buttons, in order to hide them you will have to prepare the front of the card on one piece of cardstock, and once you finish that, you’ll stick another piece of cardstock of the same size in the back.

(1) So then, first of all, cut the brown cardstock into 2 pieces of 4.25in by 5.5in (that’s a standard card, which is 10.8cm by 14cm). Get one of the pieces, put the stamps in the acrylic block and stamp your message in versafine ink (vintage sepia), in this case I wrote Happy Birthday Valentino. Ink the edges of both pieces with distress ink and the help of the sponge daubers.

(2) Get the Key and Keyhole brads and place one Key and one Keyhole in 2 letters you select. I recommend to put them in different words (one being the name, so that word is special) and far from each other if you can. In this case I placed the Key in the I letter of Birthday and the Keyhole in the O of Valentino. You just need to make a little hole in the centre of the letter and pass the 2 legs of the brad through the hole. Turn the cardstock and open the brad legs so they are flat against the paper, pointing to opposite sides.

(3) Now get the lace and cut 2 pieces slightly larger than the width of the card. In this case, you can cut them to 5in. Glue them to the cardstock with the adhesive (top and bottom, as per the picture) leaving extra lace at both sides. Then don’t cut the extra lace, you need to stick it to the back of the cardstock with adhesive and you will hide that later.

(4) Now for the buttons! For the top part I decided to place one big button on the left side and two small buttons on the right side. Now you have to sew! That will give it a very different look in comparison to just glue them (with a glue dot, if you want to skip the sewing) and you will ensure they never fall.

If you know how to sew, just go for it, sew the buttons wherever you like and jump to step (5)

If you don’t know how to sew, Let me explain to you: To start sewing, get a 60cm long thread and fold it. Then thread the needle with this double thread. Now get both ends of the double thread and make a knot at the very end. You will get a big knot and 4 threads going to the needle, so around 15cm of thread. This will reduce your sewing time. Now place the buttons on the places you want them to be and with the needle just make a template hole (punch through the paper) on each button hole, so you can see them on the back. Then pass the needle from one of the holes (hole 1) on the back towards the front and pull until the knot is fixed on the back. Then get the needle through one of the button holes and put the button flat on the paper. Now, choose a hole different to the one the needle came from and pass the needle from the front to the back of the cardboard through one of the template holes you did (hole 2). I like to sew the buttons in crosses (X) so I choose the one opposite. Once the needle is in the back, do another stitch through the same 2 holes, first hole 1, then hole 2. Now the needle is in the back again. If the button has 2 holes, you just need to do a knot to finish and cut the thread. If it has 4 holes, then choose a new set of holes and repeat the 2 stiches (on holes 3 and 4). Once done, finish with a knot on the back and go for the next button to sew. Repeat.

(5) For the bottom part I chose to do a cluster of buttons on the left and leave the right empty. I think that sometimes leaving things un-balanced or in odd numbers looks better.

(6) As a final step, glue the other cardboard piece to the main postcard piece so everything (brads, threads and lace ends) is hidden.

And that’s all! Let´s go for Aida’s now…

#2 – Happy Birthday Aida!

To make this one, first get the different pieces of paper:

• Create a card base out of a brown cardstock that measures 4.25in by 11in (10.8cm by 28cm) and fold it in half, so you get a top folded card – this is the card base
• Then cut a piece of same cardstock smaller than that, for example 3.75in by 5in (9.5cm by 12.7cm) – this is the main piece
• Finally, cut a piece of ivory cardstock with regular scissors of 4.25in by 5.5in (10.8cm by 14cm). Then get the edge scissors and trim the edges evenly, so you get a rectangle with a nice edge which is smaller than the base but bigger than the main piece – This is the middle panel or frame

Now ink all the edges of the 3 papers with distress ink and the sponge daubers.

Now, similarly to Valentino’s card, repeat steps (2), (3) and (4):

Finally, for the bottom part, create a brad using the instructions in the kit. You basically punch the paper you like, glue it to the metallic brad and then you glue the transparent cover on top. Once done, place the brad in the same way you did for the other brads but this one goes on the bottom right, on top of the lace:

Now that you have the main piece completed, all you have to do is stick it centred, on top of the ivory paper using foam adhesive for dimension, and also stick the ivory paper on top of the card base (either with foam adhesive or with regular adhesive).

RETROSPECTIVE – JANUARY AND APRIL 2015 – HAPPY BIRTHDAY VINTAGE CARDS

Entre mis pequeños tesoros de scrap tengo una caja de metal de esas antiguas en las que vendían las gasas de botiquín. Perteneció a la abuela de mi novio y está llena de botones antiguos. Ella iba guardando todos los botones que llegaban a sus manos en cajas similares y separados por colores. Tengo el privilegio de poseer un par de esas cajas, la de los botones blancos y claros y la de botones negros. Son tan preciados para mí que sólo los utilizo en ocasiones especiales o para proyectos especiales.

Así que llegaron los cumpleaños de dos de mis amigos más cercanos, uno en enero (Valentino) y uno en abril (Aida). Como sé que les gusta mucho el estilo vintage, decidí crear una tarjeta de ese tipo y cuando me acordé de los botones, el diseño salió solo. Les encantó! Y vosotros qué pensáis?..

Estas son las dos tarjetas y, exceptuando el papel crema y el brad en la esquina inferior derecha de la Aida, he creado las dos con los mismos materiales y técnicas. Aunque pueden parecer difíciles de hacer, son bastante sencillas y rápidas de hacer, ya lo veréis.

  

Explicaré la de Valentino primero, ya que es la más sencilla y luego iré a por la de Aida, que tiene un par de detalles más.

• Bloque acrílico

• Tsukineko esponjas aplicadoras – set de 3
• Adhesivo (cinta de doble cara o cualquier otro que sea permanente)
• Tijeras
• Tijeras de forma (*)
• Cartulina o papel crema (*)
• Papermania Brad Making Starter Kit with Refills – 588915 – Set para crear brads(*)
• Cualquier papel estampado que tenga flores pequeñas o un detalle pequeñito que te guste (*) 
• Cinta de espuma (foam) de doble cara (*)

Estos son todos los materiales. He marcado con un asterisco (*) los que he utilizado sólo para la tarjeta de Aida

#1 – Happy Birthday Valentino!

HOW-TO

La tarjeta de Valentino no se abre, es decir, se trata de una postal. Como tiene puntillas, botones y brads, con el fin de ocultar todo lo que queda por el otro lado, tendrás que preparar por un lado la parte frontal de la tarjeta en un trozo de cartulina, y una vez que termines esto, lo tendrás que pegar en otro pedazo de cartulina del mismo tamaño.

(1) Así pues, en primer lugar, cortar la cartulina marrón en 2 piezas de 4.25in por 5.5in (que es una tarjeta estándar, que son 10,8 por 14 cm). Coge una de las piezas, prepara el sello (poniendo el sello en el bloque acrílico) y estampa el mensaje en tinta versafine (vintage sepia), en este caso escribí Happy Birthday Valentino. Entinta de los bordes de ambas piezas con tinta distress y con la ayuda de las esponjas aplicadoras.

(2) Coge los brads de llave y ojo de la cerradura y coloca una llave y una cerradura en las 2 letras que elijas. Te recomiendo ponerlas en palabras diferentes (una de ellas en el nombre, para que vean que esa palabra es especial) y si puede ser, lo más separados posibles. En este caso puse la llave en la letra I del Birthday el ojo de la cerradura en la O de Valentino. Sólo tienes que hacer un pequeño agujero en el centro de cada letra y pasar las 2 patas del brad a través del agujero. Dale la vuelta a la cartulina y abre las patas brad del todo, para que queden completamente pegadas al papel, señalando a lados opuestos.

(3) Ahora coge la puntilla y corta 2 piezas un poco más grandes que el ancho de la tarjeta. En este caso, puedes cortar a 5in (unos 13cm). Pégalas a la cartulina con el adhesivo (parte superior e inferior, según la imagen) dejando de sobre puntilla por ambos lados. No cortes la puntilla que sobra, dóblala y pégala a la parte de atrás de la cartulina. Ya la ocultarás más tarde.

(4) Ahora a por los botones! Para la parte superior decidí colocar un gran botón en el lado izquierdo y dos pequeños en el lado derecho. Ahora a coser! Coserlos de verdad le dará un aspecto muy diferente en comparación con simplemente pegarlos y además te asegurarás de que nunca se van a caer. Si te quieres saltar la costura por hoy, los puedes pegar con un glue dot.

Si ya sabes coser, los pasos siguientes se resumen en: cose el botón dónde y cómo te de la gana y pasa al paso (5).

Si no tienes ni idea de coser, te explico: Para empezar a coser un botón, corta un trozo de hilo de 60cm y dóblalo. Entonces enhebrar la aguja con este doble hilo. Ahora junta ambos extremos del hilo doble y haz un nudo al final. Ahora deberías tener un nudo gordo y 4 hilos que cuelgan de la aguja, por lo que eso serán unos 15 cm de largo. Esto (poner el hilo doble dos veces) reducirá el tiempo de costura. Ahora coloca los botones en la posición que te guste más y con la aguja perfora el papel a través de todos los agujeros del botón (agujeros guía), así puedes verlos por detrás y te sirven de guía. A continuación deja los botones a un lado, coge la cartulina y pasar la aguja (pincha) por uno de los agujeros del papel (agujero 1) desde la parte de detrás hacia la parte de delante de la cartulina y tira hasta que el nudo llegue al papel y el papel le haga de tope. A continuación, coge el botón y mete la aguja a través de uno de los agujeros del botón. deja caer el botón y llévalo hasta que quede plano en el papel.

Ahora, elije un agujero diferente del botón (agujero 2) y pincha a través de él con la aguja (el agujero debería coincidir con uno de los de la guía). A mí me gusta coser los botones en cruces (X) así que elijo el agujero opuesto. Estira de la aguja hasta que el botón quede fijo en el papel y el hilo esté estirado. Una vez que la aguja está en la parte de atrás, haz otra puntada a través de los mismos 2 agujeros, pincha primero el agujero 1 y luego el 2. Ahora la aguja está en la parte de atrás de nuevo. Si el botón tiene 2 agujeros, ya has acabado, sólo tienes que hacer un nudo para terminar y listo, corta el hilo. Si tiene 4 agujeros, a continuación, elije un nuevo conjunto de agujeros y repetir los 2 puntos de costura (en los hoyos 3 y 4). Una vez hecho esto, termina con un nudo en la parte de atrás y pasa a por otro botón. Repite todo el proceso.

(5) Para la parte de atrás decidí crear un cluster o agrupación de botones a la izquierda y dejar la derecha vacía. Creo que a veces las cosas desiguales o en números impares suelen quedar mejor.

(6) Como paso final, pega la otra pieza de cartulina a la parte de atrás de la cartulina principal, de esta forma toda la parte fea de atrás (patas de los brads, hilos y puntas de las puntillas) queda oculta.

¡Y eso es todo! Vamos a por la de Aida ahora …

#2 – Happy Birthday Aida!

Para hacer esta, primero prepara los distintos trozos de papel:

• Crea una base de tarjeta de cartulina marrón de 4.25in por 11in (10.8cm por 28cm) y dóblala por la mitad, de esta forma consigues una tarjeta que se dobla por arriba y se abre por abajo – esta es la base de la tarjeta
• Ahora corta una pieza de la misma cartulina pero más pequeña, por ejemplo de 3.75in por 5in (9.5cm por 12.7cm) – Esta es la pieza principal
• Por último, corta un trozo de cartulina de color crema de 4.25in por 5.5in (10,8 por 14 cm) con tijeras normales. A continuación, usando las tijeras de formas, recortar los bordes de manera uniforme, por lo que obtendrás un rectángulo con un borde de la forma que hayas elegido y que es menor que la base, pero más grande que la pieza principal – Esta es la pieza de en medio o marco

Ahora entinta todos los bordes de los 3 papeles con tinta distress y con las esponjas aplicadoras.

Ahora, al igual que con la tarjeta de Valentino, repite los pasos (2), (3) y (4):

Finalmente, para la parte inferior, crea un brad siguiendo las instrucciones del kit. Es, básicamente, perforar el papel que te gusta, pegar el círculo perforado en el brad metálico con el adhesivo que incorpora el kit y luego pega la cubierta transparente (resina) en la parte superior. Una vez hecho esto, coloque el brad de la misma manera que los otros brads encima de la puntilla de abajo a la derecha:

Ahora que has terminado la pieza principal, todo lo que tienes que hacer es pegar esta pieza centrada, encima del papel crema con foam (espuma adhesiva) para darle un poco de volumen y a continuación pega el papel crema encima de la base de la tarjeta (puedes usar otra vez el foam para esto o usar un adhesivo normal).
